A Glimpse of Heaven: Grief, Self and Community on the Camino

  • Description
  • About the Author
  • This is a story of journeys.

It is about my journey through grief and acceptance after I lost my wife to cancer in 2019. It is also about my two-month, 900-kilometre walk on the Camino de Santiago – a thousand-year-old pilgrimage route that is a network of walking paths across Europe, culminating in Santiago de Compostela, Spain that has inspired popes, royalty, movie stars, politicians, and countless others and, today, attracts half a million pilgrims annually.

Here is a record of the sights and events I experienced, the fellow pilgrims who bear-hugged me, the strangers who offered me shelter, and the good friends I made.

Most of all, it is about my journey of discovery – an unwrapping of profound, universal spiritual truths: the power of gratitude, the necessity of forgiveness, and the reminder that while destinations are important, journeys matter just as much. These, and other truths, helped me reconcile the pain of loss, brought me immense joy and hope, revealed my purpose in this world, and gave me a glimpse of heaven.

  • Alexander Ee was educated in St. Stephen’s School, St. Patrick’s School and Hwa Chong Junior College.

Following his completion of full-time National Service as a commissioned officer, Alexander read law at the National University of Singapore where he met his wife.

Upon graduation, he was called to the Singapore Bar and practiced law. He later became a business consultant and eventually settled into a career in the real estate industry.

Life changed for him when his wife was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2019.

Alexander has left the corporate world and is focused on trying to lead a life dedicated to others.
