As they explore during this period of social change, they see people learning a new national language; health inspectors catching street hawkers; and families moving out of kampongs. Ling and Aidan see five scenes from paintings in the social realism style, helping readers understand how everyday people lived in Singapore at the time.

Esther Eio is an experienced children’s author, educator and communicator. She writes preschool curriculum, conducts storytelling sessions and runs enacted museum tours for children.
Dr Jean Liu is a former Assistant Professor at Yale-NUS College, where she taught within a liberal arts curriculum for nearly a decade.
